Roof Treatments in Green Island, NY

Black streaks, green moss and crusty lichen make a roof look older than it is and hold moisture against your shingles. We apply a gentle treatment that stops the growth, then let the weather finish the job. You get a dry-day appointment and an arrival window you can plan around.

What a roof treatment does for your shingles

Those dark streaks running down the roof are usually algae feeding on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles. Moss is the bigger worry. It soaks up water, creeps under shingle edges and can lift them over time. Lichen roots into the granules and hangs on for years.

A roof treatment is a low-pressure application of a growth-inhibiting solution. Nothing scrubs or blasts the surface, so the protective granules stay where they belong. The treatment kills what is living on the roof, and over the following weeks ordinary rain rinses the dead growth away.

It is the right call when growth is spreading but the shingles themselves are still sound. If we see damage that needs a roofer, we tell you plainly and show you a photo instead of treating a roof that will not benefit.

What's included in every roof treatment

A close look before anything is sprayed
We check each slope for algae, moss and lichen and note any lifted, cracked or missing shingles. You get photos of what we found so you can see it from the ground.
Protection for plants and your home exterior
Shrubs and beds under the eaves get wetted down and covered where needed. We also take care around siding, outdoor fixtures and any permanent lighting along the roofline.
Even application across affected slopes
The solution goes on at low pressure so it soaks into the growth without disturbing the shingles. Shaded slopes that stay damp longest get the attention they need.
Hand removal of thick moss
Where moss has built up into heavy mats, we loosen it by hand first so the treatment can reach the roots underneath.
A follow-up check
Results build over several weeks. We check back on how the roof is fading and answer any questions as the streaks clear.

Signs your roof is ready for a treatment

  • Dark streaks down the slope

Black or gray stripes that start near the ridge and widen toward the gutters are a classic algae pattern. They tend to show first on the north side.

  • Green fuzz in the shingle seams

Moss starts small along the edges and keyways of shingles. Once it fills those gaps, it holds water against the roof long after a storm passes.

  • Pale, crusty spots

Round gray-green or white patches are lichen. They grip tightly and spread slowly, so treating early keeps the job simpler.

  • A slope that never seems to dry

Roofs under tall trees stay damp through the humid summers and wet springs common across the Capital Region. That shade is where growth takes hold fastest.

  • You're planning permanent lighting

Treating the roof before a permanent lighting install means your new roofline lights sit against clean shingles instead of streaks.

How your roof treatment is scheduled and done

  1. 1

A phone call and a free quote

Tell us about your roof and what you're seeing. We look it over, explain what the treatment will and won't do, and give you a clear quote.

  2. 2

A dry-weather date with an arrival window

The treatment needs a few dry hours to work, so we pick a day with a good forecast and give you an arrival window. You don't need to wait around all day.

  3. 3

    Updates if the weather changes

If rain moves in, we call you ahead of time with a new date rather than showing up and treating a wet roof. You always know where your appointment stands.

  4. 4

    Treatment day

We protect the plants, check the roof, loosen any heavy moss and apply the treatment. Most homes are finished in part of a day, and we leave the yard the way we found it.

  5. 5

Results over the next few weeks

Moss browns and loosens, and streaks lighten with each rain. We check in to make sure the roof is clearing the way it should.

What affects the cost of a roof treatment

Every quote is based on your roof, so two neighbors with similar houses can get different numbers. We walk you through what's driving yours and put it in writing before we schedule. There are no surprise charges added on treatment day.

Roof size and pitch
More square footage takes more solution and more time. Steep roofs need extra safety setup to work on properly.
How much growth there is
Light algae streaks are quicker to treat than thick moss that needs loosening by hand first.
Access around the house
Height, dormers, tight side yards and dense landscaping under the eaves all change how long setup and protection take.
Pairing it with other work
Treating the roof on the same visit as a permanent lighting quote or install can save a separate trip, and we'll tell you if that makes sense for your home.

Roof treatment questions we hear most

Something not covered here? (518) 749-3307

Will the treatment hurt my plants or lawn?

We wet and cover plants under the roof edge before we start and rinse them afterward. Using low pressure keeps overspray and runoff to a minimum. Most gardens look exactly the same the next day.

How soon will the streaks disappear?

Moss usually browns within days. Algae streaks fade more gradually as rain rinses the dead growth off, often over several weeks. Heavier growth can take a full season of weather to clear completely.

What happens if it rains on my appointment day?

We watch the forecast and call you before the visit if rain is likely. We'll set a new date and arrival window with you. Treating a wet roof just wastes your money, so we won't do it.

How long does a roof treatment last?

That depends mostly on shade and moisture. Sunny roofs stay clear longer, while roofs under heavy tree cover may need attention sooner. We'll give you an honest idea for your roof when we look at it.

Is your crew properly covered to work on my roof?

Yes. We're licensed and insured, and we've been in business 5 years. Working safely on residential roofs, with the right ladders and footing, is a regular part of what we do.

Do I need to be home during the treatment?

Not usually. As long as we can reach the roof and the yard, you're free to go about your day. We'll let you know when we're finished and what to expect over the next few weeks.
